Visceral surgery (also called abdominal surgery) is a branch in medicine and includes the detection and operative treatment of diseases, injuries, malformations of organs or of hollow organs such as the stomach and intestine. The visceral surgeon is specialised in the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus to the anus).

New techniques such as minimal invasive surgery bring many advantages to the patient such as smaller scars, less pain and shorter stays in hospital.
