The gastroenterologist examines the disorders and diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine and the liver, biliary tract (gall stones) and pancreas (pancreas).

Hepatology is an other specialised branch of the gastroenterology. Important diagnostic procedures in gastroenterology are ultrasound, endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy), endosonography and liver biopsy (needle biopsy) in hepatitis or liver tumours.
